The Art Of MLM War
By Ken Seto & Sun Tzu

On Bad-Mouthing Your Competition

Many people in the MLM industry think it is a good tactic to say bad things about their competition in order to gain favor with their prospects.  As would be leaders these tacticians of disgrace also teach their followers to do the same.  This is a silly tactic that is doomed to fail.  Whenever your competition says bad things about you, take heart, the battle is about to swing in your direction.

Sun Tzu put it this way 2000 years ago:  Arms are tools of ill omen – to employ them for an extended period of time will bring about calamity.  As it is said, “Those who like to fight and so exhaust their military inevitably perish.”

Always carry the fight to your competition by leading with what is right about your company, products and team, rather than what is wrong about your competitors.  No one respects or joins the bad-mouthier, except others like him.

On Recognition

Some think it fair to reward everyone on your team regardless of their contribution.  They feel that if you are always rewarding everyone with high praise that they will stay on your team longer and you will grow a MLM army of happy distributors.

While you may attract those starving for attention, you will offend those who perform at much higher levels than the average.  You also cut your team off from all source of inspiration and pride.

Sun Tzu: In a chariot battle, reward the first to capture at least ten chariots.  If you reward everyone, there will not be enough to go around, so you offer a reward [recognition] to one in order to encourage everyone.

Armies of performers build Empires; don’t divide the spoils of war among the masses, save the best for the warriors.

On Knowing Your Craft and Developing Your Skills

Some feel that MLM is not serious business so it is effective to simply join and tell the world “here I am.”  Or they possibly think that once they learn the basic presentation that their learning stops there.  Building an empire takes skills developed by employing an endless process of preparation.  MLM is profitable for those that know their craft and employ their skills persistently and consistently.  Those that know their craft are the ones who have invested in books, tapes and seminars and endlessly practice what they have learned in the field where it counts.

Sun TzuTherefore the victories of good warriors are NOT noted for cleverness or bravery.  Therefore their victories in battle are not flukes.  Their victories are not flukes because they position themselves where they are sure to win, prevailing over those who have already lost.

The line between victory and defeat is often a fine one.  However, victory always favors the best prepared to win.

On Momentum

When it comes to building a large MLM organization, momentum is everything.  Without it, the empire is never built.  Therefore, when you begin to build your team, never measure the time you spend as if twenty minutes a day is all you need.  You must spend whatever time it takes to get the job done.  To build an empire you must create an explosion.  To create an explosion you must build momentum.  To build momentum you must create an air of expectancy.  To create and air of expectancy you must build a team of at least 300 distributors within a 6 month period of time.  To do this, you must personally sponsor a person a day for six months and be involved in enough 2 on 1 presentations or three-way calls to sponsor the other 120.  Once you have done this, you will have created momentum and your team will begin to double in size every 30 to 45 days.

Sun TzuWhen an army has the force of momentum, even the timid become brave; when it loses the force of momentum, even the brave become timid.  Nothing is fixed in the laws of warfare – they develop based on momenta.

Building an empire is not for the faint of heart, however, you can never do it if you don’t understand what it takes when you set out to get it done.  As in the game of life, winning in MLM takes strategy, I often look to the master strategist, Sun Tzu, the author of The Art of War, for inspiration and guidance.   Sun Tzu was a brilliant general who lived in China over 2000 years ago.   I will be writing more about MLM strategies and Sun Tzu over the next few months in Greg’s MLM Success Tips Newsletter and speaking more in depth on the subject on the ship at Greg's MLM Success Tips Seminar At Sea in November 2004.
