Calcium Support
Calcium and Weight Loss
Sheila Buff
A
diet rich in this mineral has many benefits—including faster weight
loss
Is calcium a magic mineral that
will melt off your excess pounds while you sleep? Sadly, no; but
calcium does genuinely help you lose weight faster.
Powerful Proof
Researchers stumbled on the
scientific evidence for calcium as a weight-loss aid in the late
1980s as part of a study on high blood pressure. The researchers had
a group of people with hypertension add extra calcium to their diets
in the form of 2 cups of yogurt a day. The idea was that the 800
milligrams or so of extra dietary calcium would help the
participants lower their blood pressure. It did—and they also
lost an average of 11 pounds over the year the experiment lasted,
even though they weren’t dieting and the yogurt added extra calories
to their daily intake.
Based on that unexpected
finding, researchers have gone on to look at studies of the effects
of calcium on bone health to see if weight loss is an unexpected
side benefit. It turns out that it is. In study after study, the
people with the highest calcium intake overall weighed the least,
and the people with the lowest calcium intake had the highest
percentage of body fat. Low calcium intake was also associated with
a number of other medical problems, including high blood pressure,
colon cancer and osteoporosis.
In a 2002 review article that
looked at six observational studies and three controlled trials, the
authors concluded that increasing calcium intake by the equivalent
of two dairy servings per day—about 600 mg in total—could reduce the
risk of being overweight substantially.
How does calcium help you
maintain a healthy weight or lose weight if you need to? Dr. Michael
Zemel, a leading researcher in this area, thinks it’s because when
your body doesn’t get enough calcium, it starts a defense mechanism
to preserve what calcium it does have. Part of that process is a
hormonal response that starts the fat-storing process and slows down
the process that breaks fat down again for energy.
Calcium in Your Diet
The studies of calcium and
weight loss all found that dairy foods, particularly milk and
yogurt, were the most effective sources of dietary calcium. Other
high-calcium foods and calcium supplements didn’t seem to help as
much, although they did have some effect.
Fortunately, there’s another
excellent source of dietary calcium from another dairy product:
cheese. Just 1 ounce of Swiss cheese, for example, has 272 mg of
calcium. Just be sure to select semisoft, aged cheeses such as
cheddar or Colby; these give you the most calcium per serving.
To get your calcium intake even
higher, choose from the many other excellent foods that give you
plenty of calcium. Broccoli is moderately high in calcium, for
example; so are kale, Swiss chard, mustard greens and many other
dark leafy greens. (Spinach is high in calcium, but because it’s
tied up with other minerals, you don’t absorb very much.) Tofu
(select a brand made with calcium sulfate), canned salmon (with the
bones) and sardines are high in calcium.
If you’re not a cheese lover,
or can’t eat it for health reasons, or if you just want to be on the
safe side, consider taking a calcium supplement. VitaCorp’s Coral
Calcium + TM is an excellent source of calcium. It
contains two powerful sources of calcium: coral calcium and amino
acid chelate calcium from eggshell. VitaCorp’s coral calcium is
harvested from eco-friendly “above sea” sources in Okinawa. We archaeologically
harvest only the pristine white coral heads in an ecologically sound
process that does not touch or alter the fragile state of the coral
reefs and ocean environment. After it is collected, the coral is
ground to a micron size to facilitate absorption and then purified.
Our amino acid chelate calcium is processed from eggshell using a
chemical free, patented process that produces custom particle sizes
for maximum absorption! The resulting amino acid chelate contains
more than a dozen amino acids, including Glutamic Acid, Proline,
Lysine, Valine, Threonine, Leucine, Isoleucine, Tyrosine, Aspartic
Acid, Arginine and Alanine. In fact, the quality of our amino acid
chelated eggshell calcium is so high that it meets the tough lead
free requirements of California’s Proposition 65.
How Much Do You Need?
Your need for calcium changes
as you age. From the age of 19 to 50, you should aim for at least
1,000 mg a day. After age 50, that amount should increase to at
least 1,200 mg daily for a man and 1,300 mg for a woman. According
to Dr. Zemel, the optimum fat-burning dose of calcium is 1,200 to
1,600 mg a day.3
Chances are you’re not getting even the minimum recommended daily
amount—nutrition surveys show that few Americans do. In fact,
according to Department of Agriculture surveys, 90 percent of adult
women in the United States get less than 800 mg of calcium a day.
One big reason: People mistakenly fear the calories and dietary fat
from high-calcium foods such as nuts and cheese, and end up stinting
themselves on calcium. VitaCorp’s Coral Calcium +TM has
1000mg per serving, and is an excellent source of supplemental
calcium.
Two
Powerful Forms of Calcium
Every day, your body performs functions that
rely on calcium for success. Calcium is essential to good health. That’s why
more and more people are searching for an effective calcium supplement.
Vitacorp’s Coral Calcium+ with EnZact 77k™ is the answer. This exclusive
formula delivers two powerful forms of calcium: coral calcium and amino acid
chelate calcium from eggshell.
How It Works
Why does coral have such a reputation as a
health supplement able to deliver numerous health improvements? Coral
contains high amounts of calcium and virtually every mineral found in the
human body—and in similar proportions as those found in the human body, too.
We cannot always get the minerals from our food source. In fact, much of the
soil used in food production is mineral depleted.
Coral minerals may be one of the most
effective ways to put minerals into the blood because of the high
absorbability of the minerals. Coral minerals are a full spectrum, organic,
ionic, synergistic blend of seventy-four minerals.
Amino Acid Chelate
Calcium
Our amino acid chelate calcium is processed
from eggshell using a chemicalfree, patented process that produces custom
particle sizes for maximum absorption! The resulting amino acid chelate
contains more than a dozen amino acids, including Glutamic Acid, Proline,
Lysine, Valine, Threonine, Leucine, Isoleucine, Tyrosine, Aspartic Acid,
Arginine and Alanine. In fact, the quality of our amino acid chelated
eggshell calcium is so high that it meets the tough leadfree requirements of
California’s Proposition 65.
